THE MATCHA COLLECTION

Your matcha latte starts here

Plain Japanese matcha or a sweetened blueberry blend. Pick your tin, choose your milk, and make it your way.

Some mornings call for a warm matcha latte. Others, a tall glass with ice. Before you get to the milk, there’s one choice to make: plain matcha, or a blend with flavour and sweetness already added.

Our Zen Focus Matcha contains Japanese green tea powder only. Blueberry Zen combines matcha with freeze-dried blueberry and cane sugar. Both are powders you prepare with water and milk; they give you different starting points for the drink.

You can read the full descriptions for Zen Focus and Blueberry Zen on their store pages. If you’re choosing matcha latte powder by sweetness, this ingredient difference is the most useful place to start.

Plain matcha: you choose the sweetness

Zen Focus is the option for a plain tea base. Add the milk you like, taste, and decide whether you want any sweetener. You’re not starting with sugar already mixed into the powder.

It also leaves room to change the drink from one day to the next. You might use less milk for a more tea-forward cup, or more for a longer latte. Start with the recipe below, then adjust one thing at a time so you know what you liked.

Blueberry matcha: the flavour is already in the tin

Blueberry Zen brings together matcha, freeze-dried blueberry and cane sugar. If a fruit-flavoured latte is what you’re after, you don’t need to start by finding a separate blueberry ingredient.

Make the drink before reaching for syrup. There’s already cane sugar in the powder, and sweetened milk can add more sweetness. Taste it with the milk you’ve chosen first; you can always adjust the next cup.

Two recipes to start with

The suggested amounts are different for the two powders. Measure the tea base first, then add milk. A kitchen scale is useful here: an ordinary teaspoon isn’t a reliable way to measure one gram.

Starting recipes from our product pages

Powder

Make the tea base

Add milk

Zen Focus Matcha

Whisk approximately 1 g of powder with 30 ml of water at 80°C.

Add steamed oat milk to make a warm latte, using as much as you enjoy.

Blueberry Zen Matcha

Whisk or froth 1.5 g of powder with about 60 ml of water at 80°C.

Add about 180 ml of iced oat milk for the suggested iced latte.

Use the directions on your current tin if they differ from the online recipe. The same weight of the two powders won’t contain the same ingredients: Blueberry Zen includes blueberry and sugar as well as matcha.

From powder to latte

Once you’ve chosen a recipe, the sequence is simple.

  1. Measure

Measure the powder and water for your chosen tin. Start with its own serving guidance.

  2. Whisk

Mix the powder with the warm water before adding milk. Use the whisking or frothing method in the product directions.

  3. Pour and taste

Add the milk, then taste the finished drink before adding sweetener or making another change.

Make the next cup more like your favourite

If your first latte is milkier than you wanted, use a little less milk next time. If it’s sweeter than you like, look at both the powder and the milk: switching to unsweetened milk won’t remove the sugar already in Blueberry Zen.

For a latte without added sugar from the powder, choose plain Zen Focus. For the blueberry version, begin with its own recipe and adjust the milk to taste. Neither choice needs to become a complicated project.

  • Use the same cup while you’re finding the balance you like.

  • Measure the milk instead of filling the glass by eye each time.

  • Change one part of the recipe at a time.

  • Once you find a favourite, keep a short note of the powder, water and milk amounts.

Choosing between the tin sizes

Zen Focus comes in a 30 g tin and Blueberry Zen in a 40 g tin. The larger number doesn’t mean more matcha: the blueberry product is a blend, and its suggested serving is different.

Choose the ingredients and recipe you want first. Then look at the pack size and how often you expect to make a cup. Between uses, follow the tin’s storage instructions so it’s ready for the next one.
